every year, winter kills autumn / with bloodlust / with joy / it steps away from the body with red hands / and cold eyes / and bruised knuckles / brother killing brother / cain and abel
jealous over the life the other held / just as autumn killed summer / with cold eyes / and pesticides / drowning fire with poison
it’s how spring died / aflame and screaming at summer’s hand / a blur of life and death / destruction with creation
it’s how winter will die / spring’s smoldering blade in its heart / blood on its skin / the first warmth it has felt since it killed autumn
